A Fortune Statement

Packaging Design

"Fortune Statement" is part of an experimental project I started during the COVID-19 pandemic to explore and push the boundaries of package design with creative concepts. I’ve developed a series of packaging ideas that you can now view on my website.

Inspired by Mahjong, a popular game with a rich history originating in China, my project seeks to highlight the traditional craftsmanship involved in tile-making—a skill now at risk due to economic shifts and changing public interest. While Mahjong tiles have seen production advancements over the years, the methods for crafting them have stayed much the same, preserving their unique artistry.

My design concept for this project involves engraving Mahjong-inspired patterns onto glass bottles. By incorporating modern graphic elements with traditional Mahjong carving techniques, I aim to celebrate this heritage craft and reinterpret it for contemporary audiences. This design approach speaks to both Western and Eastern markets, as I strive to bring attention to traditional crafts that are disappearing worldwide.

My design pays homage to the skilled artisans who have preserved this tradition over the years. I chose a vibrant color palette inspired by contemporary and futuristic trends, while also reflecting the classic green hue associated with the "fortune" (發) character in Mahjong. To bring a modern touch, I incorporated abstract gradients, creating a concept that balances forward-thinking design with respect for the product's historical roots. This approach demonstrates how we can celebrate heritage and tradition through modern design, making cultural heritage feel fresh and inspiring more people to support and preserve it. By doing this, we can help ensure that future generations experience the intelligence and beauty embedded in world cultures.
